Winter Ours
February 8th - March 31st 2025
Public Art and Experimental Community Center in Newburgh, NY Open for Programming
Conceived by Newburgh artist Matthew Lusk and Washington, DC-based civic designer Jennifer Gardner in response to the 2024 US Presidential election as an essential, real-time meeting space and site for a crowd-sourced program available to benefit the general public.
Winter, Ours is a seven-week experimental project at ADS-DAS Gallery in Newburgh, NY, that will combine elements of art exhibitions and community center activities during the months of February and March, 2025. Planned workshops include flag-making, mending, seed banking and exchange, and grassroots organizing. Seminars addressing systems of secret communication, local Newburgh history, and Black History Month are also in development. A piano recital and evening of middle-eastern dance music are planned, and evenings of new performances with the Goudy Wildlife Club of Newburgh are scheduled for the last Saturdays of February and March. Several artists will have artwork exhibited during the run of the show, including ceramic work by Taussen Brewer and new prints by Ella Desmond. All programs are open to the public and free of charge.
Holiday Springs, Sprockets, and Pulleys
Steve Gerberich, Gerbo-Matics
Press a button or crank a wheel and Steve Gerberich's sculptures come to life. A flock of decoy geese overhead flap open suitcase wings. A wooden cow with hooves clad in high-top sneakers is milked endlessly by an over-enterprising farmer. This awe-inspiring show contains 30 of Gerberich's sculptures built during a 12 year span. From a pack rat's treasure trove of motors, toys, and other bric-a-brac, Steve Gerberich builds some of the most entertaining contraptions you've ever seen. He spins them all together in an elaborate call and response; call it a dialogue between mechanical memories and active imagination.

New Work by Tom Bregman and Amy Bandolik.
Scorched Earth, an experiential installation by Amy Bandolik and Tom Bregman
is a thought-provoking installation reproducing the aftermath of a destructive wildfire. Visitors will view and advance through a grid of blackened trees, charred earth, ash, and debris within the confines of a seemingly lifeless forest. And as they process its sights, scents, and sounds —- art adventurers will be enveloped by the magnitude of a mega-fire.
Scorched Earth exposes climate and capitalism as the primary drivers of increasingly frequent and ferocious mega-fires (Bad Fire), while honoring ecologically grounded Native American practices (Good Fire) that sustained healthy forests before European colonization.
As the Hudson Valley experiences the unprecedented continental impacts of the Canadian wildfires, Scorched Earth helps us appreciate and reckon with the consequences of our modern lifestyle and provides an opening for a better way forward.

by Nadia Tarr.
Artwork exploring the vibration of color captivates the viewer with its dynamic interplay of hues, creating a visual symphony that appears to pulsate and shift. Through intricate techniques and meticulous color choices, these pieces invite us to question our perception of color, unveiling the fascinating world of optical illusions and the emotional power of hues.

MOTHAITHEACHT
a tree planting ceremony in the ADS Ann Street Courtyard
SATURDAY APRIL 30TH
noon
JOIN US for a dedication of a family of trees in our Ann Street Courtyard
to the Druidic mind, trees are sentient beings.....The Celts believed a tree’s presence could be felt more keenly at night or after a heavy rain, and that certain people were more attuned to trees and better able to perceive them. There is a special word for this recognition of sentience, mothaitheacht. It was described as a feeling in the upper chest of some kind of energy or sound passing through you. It’s possible that mothaitheacht is an ancient expression of a concept that is relatively new to science: infrasound or “silent” sound. These are sounds pitched below the range of human hearing, which travel great distances by means of long, loping waves. They are produced by large animals, such as elephants, and by volcanoes. And these waves have been measured as they emanate from large trees.” ― Diana Beresford-Kroeger, To Speak for the Trees: My Life’s Journey from Ancient Celtic Wisdom to a Healing Vision of the Forest--
AUGMENTED REALITY.EXE 2022
OPENING MARCH 26TH
noon to 5pm
artist: Vernon Byron
medium: vinyl wrapping of steel shipping container.
Augmented Reality.exe physically augments underused public spaces through the medium of conceptual art, transforming them into sites for social engagement and community inspiration. Four images of the surrounding environment are captured at each side of the shipping container and arranged to create a cloaking effect. A message of support is embedded in each image to encourage the community to take ownership and authorship of their public spaces. The resulting Image from each side of the container is divided into a series of “image shares,” that are embellished by community members during free workshops in addition to a small team of dedicated artist assistants. Once the images are reassembled, the four images are printed on vinyl and wrapped around the 40’ shipping container beside the Ads warehouse. As part of this project, we have developed a paid assistantship for 4-5 young Newburgh artists, to emphasize artmaking as a legitimate form of labor. Each contributor’s work is conserved in the final installation, allowing all participants to maintain a sense of ownership/authorship beyond the project’s completion.
